It Takes A Village

I am sure you all are very aware of how important a collaborative relationship between all stakeholders is in helping a student achieve their personal best in school.  A colleague of mine would always shout "it takes TEAMWORK to make the DREAM WORK" when we were frantically preparing for a parent event.  Although we sometimes did not get the turnout we wanted or we had to spend countless hours preparing for the event, we knew that whomever did turnout was worth the time and effort.  We also knew that we'd never get the hours back but it would pay off in the future.

We are getting ready to host our formal first parent conferences, of this school year, and I know that you all have worked hard to prepare for them.  I wanted to just remind you of the importance of these sessions and also give you a few reminders/hints for a successful conference.

A Harvard study shared a simple acronym to help teachers and parents plan for conferences:
“BE HEARD”- Best intentions assumed; Emphasis on learning; Home–school collaboration; Examples and evidence; Active listening; Respect for all; and Dedication to follow-up

The study also shared the following:
 Approaching Parent–Teacher Conferences
• A two-way conversation. The parent–teacher conference is not only an opportunity for parents to learn from you, but for you to learn from them. Nobody knows your students better than their families. Their insights into their child’s strengths and needs, learning styles, and non school learning opportunities can help you improve your instructional methods. Your efforts to better understand their aspirations and perspectives make parents feel respected and build trust with them.
 • Emphasis on learning. You can make the most of parent–teacher conferences, and other forms of family involvement, by “linking them to learning.” This means bringing events and communication back to a discussion of strategies to support student learning. You can arm parents with knowledge and suggestions for how to help their children learn.
 • Opportunities and challenges. We all need praise and constructive criticism to grow. All parents are proud of their children and need to hear about their strengths as well as their challenges from you. This helps show parents that you value the unique strengths of their children and have high expectations for their ability to succeed in school and in life.

And, one more thing...
Here's a video about conferences.  It is directed towards new teachers but it is always nice to review these vital strategies.

I am here for you if you're worried or concerned about any of your conferences. Please come see me if you need suggestions or need me to sit in!

Have an AWESOME week!- Angela

The Break Is Near!!!

I know that we are all in need of a break and it's so close you can almost smell the turkey.  I am not going to make this too deep or make this too long since we only have two days with our kids (plus I am STILL SICK!!!!).  I promise a more inspiring video clip and message next weekend.  This weekend I am just going for laughs! Hope you enjoy this family! I know that it's a bit corny but it makes me laugh and they're from NC so we're supporting homegrown "talent"!   See you Monday and I really HOPE I am back on my A Game...the full moon rises this coming week!!!

Week of November 23-27, 2015

  • Teacher Workday (if you are not working please turn in paperwork to Joe ASAP)

Reminders
  1. When you're out please make sure you let Joe know that you're going to be out and who your sub is going to be.  It's great you're telling Amber and I but we're still having major miscommunication.
  2. Remember that when you're talking to a student you're talking to some one's child. As you all know, some times it's not what you say but the tone that pushes it from helpful and supportive to hurtful and destructive.  Also, our rooms don't have ceilings so someone most likely is listening and judging you by your actions/words.
  3. Wash your hand...often! What ever mess I have caught is the worst I have experienced in years! I don't want anyone to go through this!
  4. Dickens Holiday is Friday, November 27th.  If you're looking for something so Anti Black Friday check it out: http://www.theartscouncil.com/dickensmain/

I am so THANKFUL for all of you!

When you're focused upon how good the good is, the good gets better. Abraham-Hicks Quotes (AHQ3178):
I am going to get really REAL right now!  Since being hired in July of this year, I have been STRESSED and have questioned if I should be at TCEA.  I mean seriously...this position has been a challenge and the crazy thing about it is that I really wanted this challenge.  Have you ever wanted something so badly, but once you got it you realized you might not be completely ready for the challenge?

So here I am and I am doing what I've always wanted to do and it's not easy.  Some days it's downright HARD but you know what???? I know that this is where I need to be. It's where I want to be.  And you are the people that I want to be taking on this challenge with.   And I am learning to appreciate all the challenging situations (carpool, poop on the floor, vomit, uninvited guests, pulled fire alarms, etc.) because they are giving me experiences that are making me a better principal. I am thankful for having the opportunity to work alongside you, making good things happen for other people!  What are you thankful for? Who are you thankful for?  Research shows that those that express gratitude feel better about their lives and are happier.  Take a moment to watch this clip below and they go out and thank someone for what they do or for influencing your life...what do you have to lose?

To improve, things have to be "tweaked" and improved.  All people agree with this fact and no one will argue about this being true.  The struggle comes when the "tweaking" and improving relates to people having to change what they're used to doing and/or if the change seems to involve more work.

This struggle is real and has happened to me many times in my life.  One area where I struggle and have fought improvement has been my health.  I know what to do and have done it twice (proof below) but I still feel like it's not going to happen again.  It takes work...it take perseverance...it means I have to make sacrifices and know that although every day won't be my best, small changes here and there can get me back to where I need to be.

I am sharing my personal struggle with being healthy to be transparent and let my "humanness" show.  I also wanted to share my struggle because there's another struggle that we are all a part of here at TCEA.  That is the struggle to create a mission and vision that guides all we do while still trying to find who "we" are.  A school in it's second year is still a baby but we have the adult responsibility of giving our best to the kids in our building.  That means we have to dig deep.  That means we have to admit mistakes and know that although we fail, at times, we need to dust ourselves off and move forward.  It means we celebrate what we do well and try to replicate it in every room in our building.  It means we have GRIT!

Let's dig deep for our students and not become stagnate.  Let's challenge ourselves and model this vital skill of never settling for easy when better is available.

I hope you've had an awesome weekend and are ready for an AMAZING week!
