Hope? Faith? Courage?

Jacob Lawrence called Forward from 1967

If you have not heard of the One Word Challenge vs. New Year Resolutions, I encourage you to explore this concept.  What the supporters of the One Word Movement believe is that having one focus and getting rid of a list of ways you plan to improve helps you actually change your behaviors and follow through with your change.  To learn more about this, click here.

I promised myself I would not get too preachy but after a being cooped up with myself trying to get better from a sickness that I have put off for too long (since Thanksgiving Break)... and watching my once vibrant grandmother lay in her bed as hospice has been called in... I have come to realize that this blog is for you BUT much more for me.  So this week (short or maybe not even existing if snow piles up), I want you to take the time to listen to the podcast on Courage.  I considered Hope and even Faith for 2018 but after seeing this quote:

Courage is my only option for 2018.  I think COURAGE should be the 2018 word for TCEA!  In the podcast you'll hear about cases where courage was needed and developed and ****spoiler alert**** none of the cases are at schools. But all of you are smart enough to make connections and take what you hear and apply it to what you do Monday-Friday in our building.

Podcast is here!!!

Remember, we are teaching the students using the Artful Thinking Palette (see below).  We can use the purple paint of finding complexity or the orange paint of comparing and connecting to take this podcast and extend to our lives, jobs and relationships with others.

There are many nuggets of wisdom in this podcast but in the first story, I heard these lines that spoke to me...

"Culture is the accumulation of EVERYONE'S ACTIONS."

We need to collaborate and work together so each of us can be the best version of ourselves that we can be. If we don't...

"The most dangerous thing in an organizations is silence. It's all those brains whizzing around full of observations, insights and ideas that are not being articulated."

And if we do not work together and create a culture that encourages ALL students and wants the best for ALL students and expects each of us to have the COURAGE to give our ALL and the best we have to give (and the courage to come back the next day to give differently if the first time bombs)...we have created a dangerous situation for ALL OF US!

"Courage is having the clarity to see the two bad choices (to say something or not say something).  There is no safe path. You do know that if you don't speak up, everything will stay the same."

Margaret Heffernan is just one of the featured speakers in the podcast but I am hoping her words will draw you in to listen to the 48 minute presentation (see link above).

I am looking forward to this next 6 months working out our plan for success.

Hope to see you tomorrow.  If we do close or have any delays, we'll send you EMAIL and Activate Phone Tree.   - Angela

Almost there!!!

Three Days Until Winter Break!!

I do not have much to share with you before our much needed break.  I can give you a few updates from last week though...
  1. The visit to NCDPI went well this past Tuesday.  They did tell me that they expect to see continued growth and higher proficiency when we are called back to NCDPI in December 2018 to discuss our renewal.  Please see the email sent on 12.17.17 for a copy of our strategic plan for 2017-2020.  We will have an after school meeting to discuss this plan and prepare for 1/30/18 visit from NCDPI.  I will email out the date once approved by the SIT tomorrow.
  2. Thursday, December 14th staff from the Office of Charter School came to interview students, families and staff for the TOY process for Mrs. Samuelson.  We should hear something before Winter Break.🀞! No matter what...thanks to Mrs. Samuelson for what you do on a daily basis and thanks to all who helped make Thursday run smoothly.
  3. We hope to have dates/times for you to access the building over the break (if you need to) based on the deep clean that will be taking place.  Please be on the look out for the email.

That's it for now! Don't forget our last three days of the 12 days before winter break...

The Hardest Decisions- Last Sermon for 2017

One of the best books I have ever read, as a school administrator, is entitled Good to Great Teaching: Focusing on Literacy Work that Matters by Mary Howard.  In the book, Dr. Howard focuses on moving current practice from one level to a higher one.  One of the reviews of the work states "No matter where you are in your teaching career, the real key to great work is what you bring to the table."

When I began teaching, I assumed that all of my co-workers approached the job the same way I did.  I believed that we were all in the profession to change the world for the better and that all of us understood the importance of a strong work ethic and carried the heavy burden that comes with being a teacher.  I never imagined that some were in it to hold a place of  power or just to pay bills.  Or that some are just teaching because teaching was their Plan B.

Sixteen years later, I have seen much more in the education world and my naivety has waned.  I have met the staff that I described above and can now admit that they were there way back in 2001.  I just had not had enough experiences to see it in action.

I also thought that staff planned the way that I planned for learning.  I would look at the standards that I needed to cover and then think of a variety of ways to approach each student based on their interests and abilities.  I had a plan and a back up plan and then usually my fall back plan for each lesson.  I had to look at learning in many ways to ensure that all my students could access what I was teaching.  Sometimes I was in charge, sometimes the students...and sometimes it was a complete mess and no one was. There were good lessons and bad ones and some that I still question. I learned through trial and error and an experienced teacher assistant who'd check me when I tried to control everything that learning happens in many different ways.  The quote below sums it all up...

The teachers who stand out and get the positive results for all of their students are those who figure out the HOW when it comes to implementing the curriculum.  This is an ART and the only way to get to this level is to approach your job with a GROWTH MINDSET and to be "all in" when planning and implementing lessons.

It's hard work to be an effective teacher but I have witnessed, as many of you have, that anything worth having usually involved hard work. Many times the difference between a good and great lesson is not deciding to pull out a TPT activity or customize the activity to fit the students in your care.  No it is when you must make a decision between two good ideas/concepts to implement.  Let's move into 2018 with the resolve to plan with purpose and be intentional when teaching and interacting with our students.  Let's all aim for great and not give up when we fall a bit short!
And...
One Last Thought (stolen from a fellow principal's FB page)...

You Did Not Choose Your:
πŸ–️ Students
πŸ–️ Their Parents
πŸ–️ Co-workers
πŸ–️ School's Leadership
πŸ–️ Lack of resources
Yet,You Can Always Choose to be:
✏️ Kind
✏️ Collaborative
✏️ Serving
✏️ Positive
✏️ Coachable
✏️ Hard working
✏️ The Best Version of U!

Hope everyone has an amazing week! -Angela

Are You A Tigger or an EEyoure?

I have recently joined the Twitter world for real.  I mean I have dabbled before but I am truly finding the support and networking I need professionally and personally through Twitter.  Facebook is good to catch up with people but to truly grow and connect with people, Twitter is where it's at!

One person I follow is Ryan Sheehy. (@sheehyrw)  He is a principal, associate professor at a university in CA, a father and is currently writing a book.  His recent tweet was the question above and it connected to his latest blog post.  You can read the entire post here but here are the lines that spoke to me the MOST!
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"People and systems are going to let you down. Things and situations are not always going to go your way. We have no control over the actions of people that are in our lives. We have no control over the universe. But we do have control over who we are. I know that being a Tigger 100% of the time sounds daunting but being an Eeyore sounds unproductive and no fun."

"In education we are constantly faced with students, parents, and other educators. I have had my fare share of run ins with Eeyores, but that is when my Tigger personality bounces into full effect. We must stay positive, cheerful, and confident. We need to show perseverance and  bounce back from our failures. "

"Every educator has the choice when that alarm clock goes off each morning, are you getting out of bed as an Eeyore or a Tigger?"

"Be The One that who tries your best, is up to try new things, keeps going even when you fall, and always sees the glass as being half full."
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What a great way to go into this holiday season!!!

    See everyone tomorrow. - Angela

DEVOLSON: The Dark, Evil Vortex of Late September, October and November...The End is Near

As Mrs. Brownlee shared earlier this year, DEVOLSON is REAL and thankfully we are almost out of this season.  One of the suggestions to survive DEVOLSON is to CYOC: Create Your Own Catharsis.  Catharsis is defined as: the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.  Here is my list that I use to CYOC and hopefully not cry at work (Mr. Thomas...nothing from you SIR):

The article linked here shares how the author creates her own catharsis and the other 4 ways to make it through the DEVOLSON.  We have five days left and I know we can make it!! See everyone tomorrow!- Angela

This is a great TEDx talk about putting your vision down on paper through pictures.  Thought it was a really great follow up to last week's blog.  You do not have to do this activity but could help with visions you are submitting to me.  Don't forget these are due by Tuesday, November 21st.  Hope you have had a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow at school.

    From Mrs. Samuelson:
Chameleon Clap for Ms. Weir for always being such a positive and pleasant person to talk to during walker dismissal!

Chameleon Clap for Ms. Fleming for getting married this upcoming week!  You have worked so hard to prepare for your wedding while balancing being a beginning teacher.    I am so excited for you!

Chameleon Clap for Ms. Trojan and Ms. Fleming for taking such good care of my daughter during Parent University!

Chameleon Clap for Mr. Kline for being so collaborative and helpful, with everything from our Wonder project to SIT to helping me use your karaoke machine!

    From Mrs. Majka:

I'd like to give a Chameleon Clap to Mr. Haslem for his awesome work with 4th grade and our Integration project. Thank you for your patience and guidance with teaching us how to make stamps and working with our schedules. Not only are our students excited, but we are excited as teachers to learn all about STEAM and how we can incorporate it into our classrooms. Thank you!!

A Chameleon Clap goes out to Ms. Mac for her unwavering support and guidance. Thank you, for your positivity, your encouragement, and wonderful personality! You're the kind of teammate everyone needs. :)

My last Chameleon Clap goes to Mrs. Ezell. Thank you, Mrs. Ezell for your bright smile, your positivity, your encouragement, your contagious laughter, and for being an inspiration on days it is needed most. :)

    From Mrs. Hill:
Thank you to Mrs. Trojan, Ms. Akers,  Ms. Caudle, Ms. Hill, Mrs. Weir, Mr. Thomas, Mrs. Pond, Mrs. Samuelson, Mrs. Ezell, Mrs. Majka, Mrs. Clough, Ms. Hoffman, Mrs. Russ, Ms. Hughes, Mrs. Lanham, Mrs. Honeycutt, and Mr. Kline for helping with our First Parent University. Although the turnout was not large...those that I spoke to that attended really enjoyed it!

Teachers: Please remember to stay in the kitchen until all students have gone through the serving line.  Your students that brought lunch can go through their line and go straight to the cafe and find seats. If you have duty, you may go on through the line so the cafe can be covered.  We need your help in keeping students at a Zone 0. Thanks in advance.

FEO will be sponsoring a Fall Dance on Friday, November 17th! Times are going to announced but your help is needed.  Please try to help out if available!

Next board meeting in Monday, November 13th at 515 in Studio 213. If you have concerns for the Board, please complete this form.  You do not have to leave your name.  This form is located in the HR Folder of the VIP Folder.
