There is this article that I really believe all educators need to read. You can find it HERE. For all my colleagues that don't get a chance to check it out and want the cliff notes of the article...no worries. Elena Aguilar wrote about an experiment she tried in her classroom after she read a book called Tribes: A New Way of Learning and Being Together byJeanne Gibbs.
The book is a guide to building a safe and caring learning community in the classroom. The teacher whole-heartedly adopted this book as a way to manage her room and tried out an activity called Secret Admirer. The basic idea was that each student picked out a peer's name and had to observe that student during the day and would share out something positive that student did that day with the entire of the class at the end of the day.
The students enjoyed it so much that they wanted to do it the next day and the next and the teacher varied what each day looked like to keep it fresh. Some days were challenge days and students had more than one student to keep their eyes on. Other days were "Me too!” days where students also had to identify their own behaviors for which they wanted recognition. The teacher discussed with the students whether they should continue to do these recognitions and they voted a resounding YES!
Why did this work?
Because they focused on strengths, assets, or bright spots. And researchers in all those fields agree that focusing on the positive not only feels good but works when you’re trying to change or want others to change.
The teacher acknowledges that some times it is struggle to get buy in but you continue to press and adjust until the change occurs.
I know some of you are at "wits end" with some students and feel like the entire room needs a makeover. Is there a way that you can adopt this activity to influence your room? What do you have to lose by trying it out?

This past Friday, I had the chance to hear Kelly Shiley speak. Mrs. Shiley is the founder of Mary Square and the beginning of this multi-milliondollar business came from humble beginnings. She has never spoken at an event like the one I attended Friday but she did an amazing job. I loved how focused she was on making the step out on faith be one where she "left everything on the field". She shared that she always knows that she is on the right track when her stomach hurts and she's unsure what will happen next.
That feeling has been described as having that OS!M from the book The Radical Leap by Steve Farber. He describes it as follows:
Extreme Leadership is intensely personal and intrinsically scary. You are striving to change the nature of things, and that's a scary endeavor because you are asking yourself and others to give up the familiar. It is scary because you have no guarantee of a positive outcome. It is scary because you don't know how you are personally going to be judged; your credibility is on the line. There is no way -- absolutely no way, therefore -- to participate in an authentic leadership experience without fear.
We've been conditioned to believe that fear is `bad. And while it's true that fear can save your life or keep you from doing something stupid, avoiding it can also keep you from doing something great, from learning something new, and from growing as a human being. Fear is a natural part of growth, and since growth, change and revolution are all on the Extreme Leader's agenda, fear comes with the territory.
In the right context, therefore, your experience of fear (or exhilaration, for that matter) is your internal indicator that you're moving in the right direction. That you really are leading, in other words. That scary/exhilarating experience is what I call the Oh Shit! Moment or OS!M.To put it bluntly: if you're using all the buzzwords and reading all the latest leadership books, and holding forth at every meeting on the latest management fads, but you're not experiencing that visceral churning in your gut, and you're not scaring yourself every day, and you're not feeling that OS!Moment as regularly as clockwork, then you are not doing anything significant -- let alone changing the world -- and you are certainly not leading anyone else.
As educators, we are all leaders! When I leave this Earth, I want to be known as someone who made a difference. Someone who "left it all on the field" and had no regrets for not trying to improve the education field.
How often do you feel that churn in your stomach? If you haven't felt it in a while or ever, are you doing anything significant? If you thrive on that belly feel, can you find someone else to inspire and push to step out on faith?
We owe it ourselves and more importantly to those we share our lives with!

Yesterday Colleen had a small issue with another student in her class. Mrs. Majka was quick to act, making Colleen feel both heard and safe.
When Colleen came home last night she shared with me that Mr. Thomas made her feel like the situation was being given serious attention - and that she now felt comfortable going to class again.
Both of the staff members handling the issue behaved exceptionally, and I'm incredibly grateful. While we can't be there every moment of our children's lives, I always feel comfortable sending my children to school, knowing that staff will handle any adverse situation appropriately.
This past Friday, Mr. Thomas, Ms. Covington, and I (via Google Hangout) participated in the first session of the CLC for Charter Schools. CLC stands for Curriculum Leaders' Collaborative. There will be three sessions and each of these sessions will not just focus on curriculum, as you would expect them to, but they will also focus on the other skills needed to ensure that students are accessing standard based instruction on a regularly basis.
Friday, the NCDPI group focused on the following topics:

Communication Continuum
Implementation Science
Varied Experiences of Standards Implementation
Each of these sessions were well thought out and our team has a plan on how to communicate the change in ELA and Math standards for the 2018-2019 with all our different stakeholders.
Today, I want to focus on the article entitled 4 Steps to Developing a Solution Orientation. For those that want to read it, it is linked in the title. I am going to share the 4 steps and how they relate to problems and challenges here at TCEA. The author, Daniel Horgan, notes that there are no shortage of problems. There are problems at home, work, on the way to work, on the way home etc. Most of the times when we're faced with a problem, we immediately get frustrated and "we can
feel the negativity fast tracking its way through our bodies, affecting our thoughts,
what we hear, what we say and how we interact with those around us" states Horgan. But he believes, as well as I, that when we allow negativity to affect us this way, we stand down to the problem and problems breed more problems. Our human reactions to problems need a make over. We need to gain control over the problems we face. But how?
Horgan believes there are 4 steps in creating an solution orientation in your life.
It starts with attitude: When a problems hits you, we must let it trigger a "spirit of optimism". Take the time to decide that there is a solution and you will find it.
Adopting a solution-orientation requires focus and analysis: You have to use critical thinking skills to break apart the big problems and look for the smaller elements and roots to the issue. This goes completely against the "whack a mole" concept most of employee without thinking. But by using these procedure, you're most likely to solve the problem and find a solution.
We must employ creativity to surface solutions that break the
boundaries of traditional thinking and surface differentiating solutions: "
When we commit to a solution orientation, we are demonstrating the value we bring to a relationship, a team or an organization. Leveraging our creativity requires us to effectively brainstorm solutions that exceed a short list of average ideas and instead push our thinking beyond our self-imposed limits to get to the ideas that are innovative in their design and approach" write Horgan. We have to work together to find solutions and I believe truly believe that the strategies to improve schools will not most likely come from big education consultants. Other companies and industries might have the answers we need...we just have to look outside of what's convenient.
After we discipline ourselves to adopt the attitude of a champion, commit to focus and analysis and leverage our creativity, we must take action: This is where the rubber meets the road. Time to look at all the solutions, decide on next step (individual or collective decision) and MOVE!
So, what's an issue in your class or grade level you want to tackle or need to? Take the problems on using this model. So many times, we get caught up in the emotions surrounded in the issues that we talk about doing something but never do. The problem dies down but they always return. I am guilty of this and I am sure many of you are as well.
I am going to post these steps in our PLC Room and I am looking forward to watching us work this plan as we continue to improve and press towards our mark of becoming a C School by September 2018.

Have you ever had an inner debate on whether you should take on a battle? Especially when it's a battle where the pay off might be small and not have a large impact on current practices or number of people? This is what I debated, in my head and with the unfortunate staff members stuck in a room with me, when I thought about the Bathroom Battle of 2018. To say and do too much about the bathroom cleanliness or lack there of could go two ways: (1) the attention gets the bathroom to a clean state or (2) the attention challenges the students to make it worse.
As you know, I decided to close the bathrooms on the middle grades hallway and challenged staff to ensure that the rest of the bathroom are keep clean. This is one of those things that I am unsure how it will ultimately play out but I do know that it truly is one of those small things that if left unattended could largely impact out school in a negative way. If you do not attend to the small things, they can sometimes multiple and become worse. Trashing the bathrooms extends to our halls, classrooms and then possibly damage to other students' belongings.
Will this plan work? I am unsure. Will I give up if this plan doesn't work? Nope, because I have always believed that the BIG things can't be tackled until the small things are.
What in your classroom or life are the small things that need more attention? Why wait until the next week of trimester? Start making the small things important because they usually make a big difference.
