It's My Party And I'll Cry (with laughter) If I Want To

It's my birthday...well...almost!  And I am going Oprah on y'all and sharing two of my favorite things (currently).

Here's a video I like very much about opportunity and helping others. I believe that it applies to what we do at school everyday or at least how we should see those around us.
Enjoy!

Also, here's a thought that I LOVE:

BRAVE EDUCATORS

We have completed 4 days of the 2018-2019 school year and I don't know about you but those 4 days were challenging to say the least.  Each year I begin thinking that I've got it all covered and then I realize...nope, I am not done learning yet!

Thank you for putting yourself and your ego on the line on a daily basis while teaching students at our school.  Each year brings it own unique challenges and I am glad to work with such brave people that attack stressful opportunities head on.

I hope you are enjoying your extended weekend and that you're recharged and ready for this short week.  Since this is the beginning of a new month, here are your missions for this month. All mission must be completed by 9/30/18 to receive recognition.

Culture: Contact each of your homeroom students' families and give a positive shout out. Arts and Support Staff, pick at least 21 students' families to give a positive shout out to. These can be done in Dojo or over the phone.  A form will be placed in your box for documentation this week.
Mission Completed: Earns a Mission Accomplished Stamp on your Mission File and a GOOSE (Get out of school early pass).

Arts: Plan and execute an Arts Integration Lesson in Math and share out to staff in an email or social media post. Must include pictures and a piece for student work and if using on social media use the hashtag #tceaarts
Mission Completed: Earns a Mission Accomplished Stamp on your Mission File and a Jeans Pass.

Academic: Complete and document at least one of the strategies shared by Ms. Covington. Please follow the directions in the memo to share.
Mission Completed: Earns a Mission Accomplished Stamp on your Mission File and a visit from the Hoot! Hoot! Cart

Personal: Pick two other people at work and create a Trio Accountability Model.  Each of you will hold each other accountable for a personal goal set by each person for themselves.  You will have to submit pictures of your trip meeting at least four times this month and email pictures and your goals to ahill@capitolencoreacademy.org
Mission Completed: Earns a Mission Accomplished Stamp on your Mission File and a Coffee/Tea Delivery to your room/office.

Every Kid Needs A Champion

Tuesday we begin a journey that we'll walk together over the next 10 months. I love this time of year because it truly is a time to start over.  To be a better version of ourselves and bring all that we have to our students.  Nothing happens by accident and the students on your roster are exactly in the right place, at the right time...assigned to the right educator.

I am already proud of the attention and conversations we have had over the past two weeks.  You have come to work and you're dedicated to "getting over yourself" and focusing on the teaching and learning of our students.

Please take a few minutes to listen to one of my heroes, Rita Pierson, as she talks about teaching and the relationship building that must take place.  I share this on a yearly basis but my new folks...please take a listen. She passed away 5 years ago but her words are still tried and true.

I hope you've had an amazing weekend and see all of you Tuesday (if not tomorrow)! - Angela

Why Your WHY Is So Important

I am just getting to this blog and all I can think about is ALL the things I have left to do. I feel the weight of everything on my shoulders and I feel weighed down. The reason I am just getting to this...my daughter's 11th birthday is today and she wanted a laser tag party at our house!

The reasons why I should not have done this party today:
  1. It is HOT!!
  2. I have to clean my house and yard.
  3. It is a bit expensive and this time of year money is for back to school stuff.
  4. It is a Sunday and had to fit it in after church and before all the things families with kids must do before Monday mornings!
  5. Did I mention is HOT??

So why did I do it?

Zora at 1 week old!

Because it is Zora's birthday. My tall, loving and amazing daughter was born 11 years ago just 28 weeks into my pregnancy.  Y'all...she weighed 2 lbs and 10.6 oz.  She had multiple surgeries and blood transfusions and stayed in the hospital for 7 weeks.  She had a hole in her heart and was labeled as developmentally delayed until age 3.

That's why I did all I did today.  I prayed for this little girl and would go to the hospital each evening after her birth to read to her and encourage her to keep breathing and eating and growing.

I don't spoil her but her birthdays truly are a reason to celebrate. She did what many babies that were born around August 19, 2007 in the Cape Fear Valley NICU could not do...survive and thrive.

How does this connect to the idea of knowing your why in schools?

It connects because your why is what makes you go the extra mile for your kids.  It's what makes you reassure a student that all will work out when they get a bad test score or friends exclude them.

Your why should drive you past the difficulties that come with the job and stay focused on your ultimate goal for students.

Take 4 minutes to see a clear example of how knowing and recognizing your why can make any task 100 times better.

I hope you have had an amazing weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.

Mission Possible 2018-2019

"Without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible."

- Mary McLeod Bethune

Mary McLeod Bethune's quote is one that speaks volumes to me.  If you do not know about Mary McLeod Bethune, please do a Google Search on this amazing woman.  In a nutshell, this amazing lady was born to parents who were slaves and ended up founding a private university that is still educating students more than 63 years after her passing.  This lady had to have faith when the country was telling her she was "less than" because she was a woman and an African American.

But it takes more than FAITH...

And that is where our theme comes in...

Our theme for this school year is Mission Possible! I settled on this theme for a few reasons.
  1.  This is our 5th year in existence.  The days when we could base student performance, student growth, what our school offers students, etc. can not be traced back to the familiar statement of "We are a new school".  No, we are not considered toddlers anymore and it's time we grow up.
  2. It definitely aligns with our Growth Mindset.  All things are possible with time, persistence, and hard work.
  3. We have all the right components to make our school a place where ALL students can grow and succeed. We just all need to be FOCUSED ON THE SAME MISSION.

So this year, all of you are Agents of Transformation! Welcome to the team.  What secret agent skills are you going to bring to the team? What are you committed to doing to ensure that our mission of providing a high quality arts integrated curriculum that pushes all our students to grow at least one year is accomplished?  Come prepared to discuss your secret agent skills on Thursday during our Back to School Meeting! You'll also find out your Spy Name...you'll be official then.

We'll talk more Mission Possible soon but for now enjoy this clip. This clip should reassure everyone that you are more than capable to take on this title of an Agent of Transformation.

I will be attending  leadership Retreat hosted by The Romine Group f with you on this week but I will be back and ready to kick the year off with you on Thursday! See you soon.
Angela

2017-2018 is almost a wrap...

We have made it! The 2017-2018 school year is a wrap and if you are still getting these weekly blogs in your email that means you honored the commitment you took way back in August and stuck through the HARD, UGLY, STRESSFUL and DIFFICULT to give our students our best.  They truly deserve it even if students (or their families) do not believe they do.

I am going to make this short...although I know Mr. Thomas does not believe I can do that!

So here goes (this is my version of free style rap- watch out Jay-Z)...

Dear TCEA Staff:

Another year has come and gone.

We made some memories and had some fun.

But what we accomplished was more than laughter and smiles.

We encouraged students and peers and pushed them to go more miles.

More miles of learning and innovation and imagination and trials;

We modeled for them that their worth is more than what the reports say in their files.

Although our reasons for being at TCEA might vary

There are a few things we all carry

We carry the heaviness of filling in all the gaps that students have (whether emotional, physical, educational, etc.)

We are their education salve.

I know that I have high expectations for each one of you

and that at times this makes you want to establish a coup.

But know that I truly believe in each staff member at our school

and I know that each of you have the needed tools

to better our community, our nation and the world

and end the chaos and the whirl.

We can do this one student at a time

by preparing them to walk out their destiny in their prime.

So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Thank you for your sacrifice, support, time, and energy!!! I promise all of this DOES pay off!

Hope you are enjoying your weekend and see everyone Monday!                  Angela

This weekend I am typing this blog from North Myrtle Beach.  Yes...the beach.  Now before you get all JELLY please know that I have been at a Leadership Retreat so yes...there was time for napping on the beach (under a rented umbrella- which a few years ago I would have never done but as I age I realize old folk can sleep anywhere and people get it) but also I have been in sessions being called out and having my toes stepped on as well as having confirmation moments that I am doing some things right as a leader.  This is a church leadership retreat because I am a member of our Women Ministry's Executive Leadership Team but the principles being shared and discussed can and are used in my daily journey as a school principle.  I have always believed this but our speaker reminded all of that we should have the same persona at work as we do at church and at home and if they disconnect then we can not lead anyone...Authenticity is truly needed to build trust and move organizations forward.

As I shared earlier I learned a ton but my favorite concept learned was the F.A.T principle.  To be a good leader, you must be Faithful, Accountable and Teachable.

Faithful: loyal, constant, and steadfast.

Accountable: (of a person, organization, or institution) required or expected to justify actions or decisions; responsible.

Trainable: capable of being trained.

Seems like a simple concept but as we reviewed this concept I thought about how, at times, I can be lacking in certain areas.

The whole I idea is that is you want to grow an organization to its capacity you must have members that have these qualities. Not just the leaders of an organization but each member of the team needs to have these qualities.

As leaders in your classrooms or departments which of these areas really come easy to you?  Which do you need to pay more attention to and give yourself "attitude checks" on the easy and/or hard days?

I truly believe that this concept is what has helped us get to where we are and by adding more staff members that are F.A.T we can go no where but forward.

I hope all of you have enjoyed your weekend and I will see everyone tomorrow for our last formal week of the 2018-2019 school year!                                     -Angela

πŸ¦ŽπŸ‘Chameleon ClapπŸ¦ŽπŸ‘
A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Mr. Thomas and his testing team for making our testing session go as smooth as it could be.  I remember serving as a test administrator for four years and how much easier it was IF staff read their reminders and followed my directions so...

A BIG Chameleon Clap to all who followed the directions and read/reread your reminders and emails! You make the dream work!

Thank you to all for being flexible last week and helping out when and where you were needed.

Thought for the week...
