Week of February 25, 2019

This morning I awoke to a call from my mom letting me know that one of my cousins was killed last night or very early this morning. My first cousins, on my mom's side, have been raised so close to each other that we consider each other brothers and sisters that don't stay under the same roof. Tre was one of the youngest of us so we always babied him and he would usually tag along into any mischief we got in to.

He grew up living at my grandma's house with his mother and a host of uncles, aunt's and cousins who guided him but we still couldn't save him from the allure of the streets and the "hood" mentality of getting someone first before they get you. Last night someone took his life and I am sure in time we will learn that it was for something not worth a man's life.

I share all this not to make you feel sorry for our family or to lay my burdens down. I share this because each day we have the chance to be a walking example of how you can succeed without living a life where you win by hurting others. That life is not just about being on top the easy way ,but persevering and pushing to not only better yourself but your community.

I promise you he was one of the kindest, loving, funny, mischievous, caring and good looking young men around. He loved our family and no matter what someone thought he did or even if he did something, no kid deserves this end. I will miss him and after I play through all the things I wish I could have done, I will focus on the kids still out there that do not need to end up like him.

Thanks for reading and please hug your family real tight and any young kids you know who are living a destructive life...pull them aside or text them and remind them that better still exists.

Friendly Fridays

Today's post will not be too long.  I am getting ready to go out of town and having to get this blog out earlier than usually.  I will be unavailable to return emails or text until tomorrow after 1 PM (unless you have an emergency and I'll get back as soon as I can).

Today, I want you to just....and that's a BIG JUST...reconsider Fun Fridays.  Think about the why you do it and analyze if it is causing positive changes among your students or are the same kids getting it each week.

What if you instituted Friendly Fridays?  What are Friendly Fridays? Check out the article and ideas here.

I am not outlawing Fun Friday but as practitioners we should be reflective in what we do with students and should always be willing to analyze and change our behaviors if they aren't equitable and /or producing the results desired.

Feedback...the breakfast of champions!

This weekend I had an opportunity to participate in an event where one station involved me role playing a scenario with one other participant while two other educators observed and took notes.  After the scene, I was asked to step out and then after a 5 minute wait I was provided feedback and asked the try it again.  It was never racking but never did I feel like I was being judged...I only felt supported and only as if they wanted the best performance for me because they believed in my ability.


And then...I saw this on Twitter and realized that it never hurts to remind ourselves how vital feedback is and how we can incorporate this into our daily interactions with students.  This example, TAG, only takes 60 seconds.

As Ken Blanchard stated "Feedback is the breakfast of champions." We are teaching champions each day so let's give them an outstanding meal with feedback.  Hope everyone has had a great weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone Monday!         ~Angela M. Hill

Fail. Process. Learn.

I don't know about you but I am human.  I mean seriously...I make mistakes.  I don't know it all and at times, I am falling up (trying to move forward but still failing).  Mistakes are learning opportunities and most of us tell our students to try and to learn from their mistakes.  I also recognize that when we make mistakes it puts us in a vulnerable place where we question our ability to educate students.

This quick Ted Talk talks about teaching and how you can learn from mistakes.  I was reviewing the comments and saw someone stated that we should teach students how to fail.  I agree. Don't stop at the idea of Growth Mindset but teach them how to sit with disappointment, stress, and failure.  They need to learn to Fail, Process, and Learn.

We, adults, need to be able to Fail, Process and Learn.  Our students do not have to come to school to get and education anymore. All they have to do is connect to the Internet or turn on the TV and they have more information available than what we could teach them in a day.  We truly do need to empower our students and teach them how to analyze the information they are learning.  We know how to do this and what a prime opportunity we have at TCEA to do this work while integrating the arts!

The Other Gap

As we enter into February and we look back at recent events in the news surrounding race, I really feel like the issue of the NC Teacher Diversity Gap is a topic I needed to discuss today.  The only way to improve social ills and issues is to TALK ABOUT IT (or blog about it).

The lack of diversity has an impact on students and although our school has more teachers of color than the state average, we have a gap in female teachers vs. male teachers.  Our male students need to see themselves in the teachers teaching them on a daily basis.  Please take a few minutes to view this story and then, if you feel inclined, send me an email about what you pledge to do to make a positive change in this issue.

It can be as simple as starting a Future Teacher Club for males at TCEA...

Or it could be identifying males and students of color you have in your class RIGHT NOW and telling them you see them as a teacher when they get older...

We, educators, know who we want working with us and working with our students. Who better to help change the course our state is currently on?

I encourage to embrace the entire role of educators.  We are supposed to be leaders outside of our classrooms as well.  As a wise School Board Member for Forsyth County told me..."Education always has been as always will be political. It's just we have politicians making all the rules...we need to have educators telling politicians what to do".

Thanks for all you do and thank you for bringing your entire diverse self to TCEA (unknowingly or knowingly).  I know our success can be traced back to the staff to the diverse group we are blessed to have. Have an amazing Sunday and see everyone tomorrow! -Angela

My first shout out goes to Mrs. Hill and Mr. Thomas-thank you both for the constant encouragement you give. I appreciate your time and effort you put into helping me be the best that I can be for my students. Mr. Thomas, thank you for rearranging your schedule to fit your being able to sit in on my parent meeting. I truly appreciate it a lot.

My next shout out goes to Ms. Covington. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for helping me transfom into a teacher that has made model drawing a semi favorite for my students during fractions. All of the time you take to help me and answer my questions has truly affected my students in the best way possible. Thank you!

My 3rd shout out goes to the 3rd grade team: Mrs. Weir, Mrs. DeNoble, and Mrs. Miller, thank you all for being part of my village. I appreciate the smiles, the positive daily reminders, and the laughs.

My 4th shout out goes to the Kindergarten team: Ms. Caudle, Ms. Johnson, and Ms. Williams. Thank you all for the positive encouragement regarding my being a first time kindergarten parent. Thank you all for being a listening ear to my worry about my son and thank you for what you all do everyday. Ms. Caudle, thank you for everything you do every second of every day not only for my son but for your entire class. It never goes unnoticed or unappreciated in my eyes. You're a rockstar and I couldn't have asked for a better Kindergarten teacher for my son. 

My 5th shout out goes to Ms. Mac. We've taught together for 3 years and I am extremely fortunate that our paths crossed. You are the most phenomenal sister teammate in the world. Thank you for the encouragement, the constant support that I never have to doubt, EVER!

My 6th shout out goes to Mrs. Cane, Mrs. Ezell, Ms. Mac, Mrs Akers (and mom), Ms. Covington, Mrs. DeNoble, Mrs. Weir, Mrs. Miller, and Ms. Caudle, <------My village: I wouldn't quite be where I am or who I am without my village.

Huge shout, 7th, out to Mrs. Pond who is always there with a smile and listening ear. Thank you for your constant never ending support and encouragement.

Final huge shout out to Mrs. Lanham who without hesitation covered my class on Friday so that I could support my little guy in Friday's mural unveiling. Thank you so much!

A big chameleon clap to Mr. Falls for doing a good job of executing the High School Fair and the Mural Dedication. Truly appreciate it.

The Audacity to Believe

This week I had the pleasure of talking to a colleague about our whys.  I was so pleased when this wise woman shared her reason for doing what she does because it is the same reason as mine...education is an equalizer.  All students have a right to a quality education. Period.  I think that's why I have always looked up to Martin Luther King, Jr.  He spoke of equality.  He marched for equity.  He was jailed for his desire to be treated as all human beings should be treated-with dignity and respect.

As we speak to our students this week, please go a bit deeper than years past about his life and what he stood for.  He was much more than the " I Have a Dream" speech.  He was not loved by all when he was alive (many people that call for equity are not loved by all...especially those that have more to lose when making a level playing field).  He fought for financial and job equality. He talked about the issues many of us stray away from in person and even on FB.  He called out evil and reminded people of the truths our country was founded on. Our students need to see that like all normal people, even civil rights leaders were more than a few words and the facts of their lives. 

Don't know where to start? I love King in the Wilderness documentary.  There is a free version on YouTube if you search for it.  It is not kid friendly but can give you, as an educator, more to speak about.

Creativity is Contagious

Thank goodness you do not have to wake from a comma to be able to come up with something new and innovative!!  (you'd have to watch the video to get this reference) This time of year many educators want to renew their classrooms or refresh what they have been doing.  Don't just throw everything out and begin from scratch...just be creative and tweak what you're doing.  Struggle with creativity? Check out this this quick article about 20 things teachers can do to increase their creativity.

Wondering how to add a bit of VEGAS to your lessons or have a HOOK to get your students' attention?  I know I have struggled with this and knowing where to look for videos that would engage students while relating to what I was going to cover for the day.  I ran across this resource and thought I should share it with you!

The resource is called Great Big Story and can be found at www.greatbigstory.com and I hope you find it useful.  I used this site to find my hook video for this blog today.

Reminders

• When you're out, if possible please make sure that parents of the students you serve know.  That can be a simple Dojo or not in agenda. Sometimes they send last minute messages that you don't see (because you're out) and if affects how they get home.
• Also, please make sure substitute teachers are aware of students and their services (especially if EC).  Substitute teachers should know when students are being picked up and by who.
• Please do not start to pack up until 3 PM (K-2 students) and 3:05 (3rd-8th).
