This week I want to continue our
conversation about culture. Some of you might wonder why are we talking
about culture when we are working hard to increase our ability to teach using
Teach Like a Champion Strategies and use data to drive instruction. We are
doing a lot at TCEA to ensure that our students have the best educational
opportunities available. But the bigger circle that these strategies
and professional development lie in is CULTURE.
Organizational culture is defined as the underlying beliefs,
assumptions, values and ways of interacting that contribute to the unique
social and psychological environment of an organization.
Organizational culture includes an organization’s expectations, experiences,
philosophy, as well as the values that guide member behavior, and is expressed
in member self-image, inner workings, interactions with the outside world, and
future expectations. Culture is based on shared attitudes, beliefs, customs,
and written and unwritten rules that have been developed over time and are
considered valid (The Business Dictionary).
Culture also includes the organization’s vision, values, norms,
systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits (Needle, 2004).
Simply stated, organizational culture is “the way things are done
around here” (Deal & Kennedy, 2000).
Before we can strengthen the culture at TCEA, let's define our
culture. Please watch the video below and then complete a post on our Padlet
access) and share one concept/idea (expressed or not expressed) that makes up
our school's culture.
Don't forget to post something on the Padlet by 10.12.18!
Enjoy your Sunday and I'll see everyone tomorrow. - Angela
